Application of Tungsten Electrode Materials

With the development and application of tungsten electrode inert gas shielded welding, the research on tungsten electrode is becoming more and more in-depth. In plasma arc welding, cutting, non-melting and sub-arc welding, thorium tungsten electrode was used in the past. However, due to the radioactive influence of thorium, it will damage human health and pollute the environment. Therefore, cerium tungsten electrode with cerium oxide content of 2%-4% replaced thorium tungsten electrode. In DC forward sub-arc welding, the cerium tungsten electrode is easy to start the arc, the electrode burning loss is less, and the allowable welding current density is larger than that of thorium tungsten electrode. However, in AC sub-arc welding, the burning loss of cerium tungsten electrode is larger than that of thorium tungsten electrode, and the allowable range of welding current selected for cerium tungsten electrode is smaller than that of thorium tungsten electrode.
Application of tungsten electrode in electric light source. In addition to pure tungsten, tungsten-rare earth alloy has the characteristics of low work function, high melting point and low vapor pressure, so it is used as a discharge electrode material for lamps. These properties of refractory metals can reduce the load temperature, reduce electrode burning and spatter, thereby extending the life of the lamp. However, in the case of doped tungsten, the combination of tungsten and thorium already has some unique properties. Due to the low solubility of thorium in tungsten, the thorium can maintain a low work function during the entire life of the bulb when it diffuses to the electrode tip, and it has also been shown that evaporating thorium stabilizes the electrode arc. Through research, the tungsten-based alloy material containing rare earth oxides prepared by liquid-solid mixing method is processed into a low-power metal halide lamp electrode and assembled into a 70W metal halide lamp. The luminescence characteristics of metal halide lamps with different electrode materials were measured and analyzed and compared. The starting splash resistance and corrosion resistance of metal halide lamps with dysprosium tungsten and dysprosium yttrium tungsten alloy electrodes can reach the level of thorium tungsten electrodes.
Application of tungsten electrode in plasma generator. Because of its high heat source temperature, energy concentration and high heating efficiency, arc plasma is widely used in cutting, thermal spraying, welding, melting, new material synthesis, ultra-new powder preparation, wastewater treatment and other fields. The cathode in the plasma generator, as a key component of this system, has very poor working conditions, often due to high-temperature radiation and high-energy particle bombardment and ablation, resulting in shortened service life, which seriously hinders the large-scale application of plasma technology. Rare earth tungsten electrode materials are considered to be the preferred materials currently used in arc plasma generators.
